It is long gone. My dad bumped into Jackie Gleason in Altier’s bar one night. Jackie treated my dad like someone my dad knew all his life. Bill Altier was a good friend of Fred Waring who owned Shawnee Inn at the time where Jackie frequently stayed to play golf.

@Brian C, My family (me, husband, two boys (9 & 12 at the time) stayed at Hillside Lodge in approx 1999. We had a ball! Lots to do, meals at the restaurant were included, nightly and day activities by the owners. What fun! I don’t see how any family with younger kids could not enjoy that. Teens…maybe not. Ha.

Being a kid going there was everything at the time. All the places then again remote. Now over built and more like a housing development. I guess progress. Sad though.

@Lance Longwell, Thank you for your reply Re: The Pocono Manor Inn. I agree, ‘suspicious fire’ at the Inn. Tried to contact developer in NYC; no reply. Cannot believe that local government just ignores this. Anybody out there know how I might make contact with Ingrid Kissel, (Inky.nickname); she was daughter of Mr. Kissel. Manager of PM Inn,60ties, and worked, for a time, at the Inn, post undergrad days. Anyway, thanks for your Article. If there are any updates, please let me know. akreutzberg47@gmail.com

The Pocono Manor Inn fire was in November 2019. I don’t think they conclusively ever determined the cause of the blaze. They aren’t rebuilding per se. In 2022, they announced plans to turn it into one of Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville Resorts.” The new Margaritaville will “pay homage” to the old Pocono Manor Inn supposedly. Or at least that was the plan. Some local discussion that plans have stalled.

It’s a familiar refrain in the Poconos. Suspicious fire in an old resort. A development company conveniently has plans at the ready. Things get under way, only to stall out due to lack of interest in the Pocono region, problems with local government, etc. In the meantime, more jobs leave the area and the money that does come in gets funneled to out-of-state corporations.

I came across this link from a photographer showing pictures of the remains. So sad… (if you don’t have facebook, or the link doesn’t work, try searching for Echo Lake Photography “Ghosts of the Poconos” photo shoots.

Pocono! Used to vacation their, Thanksgiving, Christmas, with family, in the 60ties. Very nice back then, a lovely Inn, skating rink, indoor pool, lots of activities like the Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot, Nightly Movies, Horseback Riding, etc. Apparently, fire destroyed most of the structure, relatively recently; 2018?. Reportedly no plans to rebuild by NYC Owners. Didn’t hear or read of any real local/community concerns about the loss.I was surprised at this since the Inn was on the National Historical Register and employed so many people in the community of Pocono Manor, Scot Run, and nearby towns.

Dress up Wednesday, Baked Alaska brought in with sparklers in the dark, emcee Bill Frost, Horseback riding every day, breakfast brought to the door in a fancy wooden box, ” Here comes the bride” played when you opened the door to your cottage. @Randy Peters, I was a camper and later a staff member at Camp Sunnybrook. Around 1971 it was sold to developers. Summer 1972 was the last year it was a Summer Camp. The developers renamed it “Lake of the Pines” and sold lots and some homes were built. I recall at some point in time there was some sort of legal issue and disputes about the use of community property facilties. I drove in to look around in the mid 80’s and saw that the main lodge was still there as well as the pool but I haven’t been back since since I moved away. Ebay has some old postcards for sale before it was a Summer camp. I think it was Werry’s or something. Also, there was a big old home that fronted on 209 that was a Dorm for staff which later became an Indian Museum tourist attraction.

All inclusive with beautiful grounds, great activities, comfortable accommodations and delicious food. I remember we ate prime rib every night for dinner. I haven’t had prime rib since. 😊
Several years ago we were on vacation at a time share in the Poconos with our kids. We took a ride and drove by Stricklin’s. It was so sad for us to see it closed and the condition it was in. It’s too bad these once popular vacation destinations have not continued and are now abandoned and destroyed.

Mountainhome is Kind of ARTSY FARTSY now. Hmm BuckHill was a resort that was running down at that time. It finally was demolished in the late 90’s The Keuhler family bought it and it went under due to mismanagement.

@Schwartz John, as far as I know the Family that owned the Summit and Penn Hills were Brothers. With the summit there was some bad investments and Not Enough Advertising. Penn Hills was Constantly Being Flooded out . Between both with Rising Taxes and Lavish spending by “family” members they could not keep up with Obligations. Standards started to fall and People gravitated away! I worked @ the Summit Stables, and lived close by to the Pocono Resorts. There is Still 1 Grand Ole DAME still fllourishing ” The Sky Top Lodge” worth the stay Elegant, spacious, bye gone era charm with Modern day Upgrades and amenities to the current times! I my self worked these resorts in the 80’s, Mount Airy Lodge, Pocono Manor resort, Sky Top Lodge as a Bus Boy , a Waiter and a Captian. A Captain is One step Down from a Matrid`e.

Kids from all over would come to get a week of intensive summer training in different sports. I am from Massachusetts and attended the wrestling camp. They had removed the heart shaped tubs! I met my future wife there ( she was there for field hockey.) We did not see each other for 5 years.
About 10 years later, we were traveling in the area and decided to visit the camp. The camp had burnt down the night before we got there.
